No Account, No Database: How OpenBiz Keeps Your Business Numbers Private
Type your revenue and profit into most online valuation tools and here is what typically happens next: you are asked to create an account before you even see a number. An email address, a password, sometimes a phone number. Only after that wall do you get your result — and by then, your business's financial details are sitting in someone's database, tied to your name, indefinitely.
We built OpenBiz differently. There is no sign-up. There is no login. And when you close the tab, there is nothing left behind on our servers — because we never put anything there in the first place.
What Usually Happens to Your Data
It is worth being specific about what "requiring an account" actually means for a valuation or appraisal tool, because the implications go beyond mild inconvenience:
- A permanent record is created. The revenue, profit, and SDE figures you type in are saved against your account, often forever, whether or not you asked for that.
- Your email becomes a marketing channel. Most sign-up flows exist partly to capture a lead — expect follow-up emails, and sometimes a sales call from a broker or advisor you never asked to be contacted by.
- Your data becomes something that can be breached. Any database that stores financial details is a target. If that company is ever hacked, your business's numbers are part of what leaks — even if you only used the tool once, years ago, out of curiosity.
- You often cannot tell who else sees it. Once your numbers sit in someone's backend, you are trusting their staff, their vendors, and their future business decisions (a data sale, an acquisition, a policy change) with information you may not want circulating.
None of this is usually explained upfront. It is simply the default architecture of "create an account, then use the tool."
How OpenBiz Is Built Differently
We made a deliberate decision: the valuation and appraisal tools would work exactly as well — often better — without ever asking you to hand over an identity or a database record.
- No account, ever. There is no sign-up form anywhere on the site. Open the valuation or appraisal tool and start typing.
- Nothing is written to a database. When you submit your numbers, they are sent to the AI to generate your report and returned straight to your browser. That request-response cycle is the entire lifecycle of your data on our end — nothing persists afterwards.
- Uploaded files are processed, then discarded. If you upload a P&L for the valuation tool to read automatically, it is used only for that one extraction and is not retained. The appraisal tool's photo upload never even reaches our servers — the images stay on your device the entire time, used only for an in-browser preview.
- Your report lives only in your browser tab. Once generated, the report is yours to read, print, or save as a PDF. It is not stored anywhere else, which also means it disappears if you refresh the page — more on that trade-off below.
Why This Actually Matters for a Business Owner
A lot of people check what their business is worth long before they seriously consider selling — sometimes just out of curiosity, sometimes to understand where they stand before a big decision. That exploration is exactly the kind of activity you might not want a permanent record of.
If your accountant, a staff member, your landlord, or a competitor ever learned you had been "looking into what your business is worth," that alone can trigger speculation you did not intend to start. A tool that keeps no record removes that risk entirely — there is no account for anyone to discover, no email trail, no saved report sitting in a company's system that could surface later.
There is a second, more mundane benefit too: because we never collect an email address, you will never receive a follow-up call or a drip campaign from us. You use the tool because you want an answer, not because you agreed to be marketed to.
What This Looks Like in Practice
The privacy design is not an abstract policy — it shapes how you actually use the tools:
- Go to the valuation or appraisal tool. No sign-up screen stands between you and the form.
- Enter your numbers, or upload a P&L and let the AI extract the figures for you.
- Generate your report. It appears immediately in the browser.
- Print it or save it as a PDF before you navigate away or close the tab — because that is the only copy that will exist.
That last step is the one habit worth building. Since nothing is saved on our end, refreshing the page or closing the tab means the report is gone for good on our side. If you want to keep it, you have to be the one who keeps it — which is exactly the point.
The Trade-off We Accepted
Being upfront about this: a system with no accounts also cannot offer a "log back in and see your old reports" feature, because there is nowhere for those reports to live between visits. If you need last month's valuation again, you will need to regenerate it or dig up the PDF you saved.
We think that is a fair exchange. The alternative — keeping an account system so we could show you report history — would mean keeping a database of business owners' financial details indefinitely, which is precisely the risk we built this to avoid. A slightly less convenient "download it yourself" habit is a small price for a "there is nothing to breach" guarantee.
Bottom Line
Most online tools ask you to trade privacy for convenience. OpenBiz was built on the belief that a free valuation tool for small business owners should not require that trade at all. No account, no server-side storage, no data to sell or lose — just a report, generated instantly, that belongs entirely to you.
If you want to see what your business is worth without leaving a trace, try the free AI valuation tool or generate a full appraisal report — both work exactly as described above, right now, with nothing to sign up for.
